This is the largest diameter front mech I have fitted, when fitting such a size the plastic spacers are not needed in the clamp. Since the spacers are plastic this surely would give some protection for your seat tube, as I am not using them should I use some other method of protecting the frame as I clamp it on ??

No protection for the seat tube needed other than don't overtighten the clamp bolt and crush the seat tube like I did with my Kona. Managed to create an 'home engineering solution' aka bodge by using a piece of steerer tube and using the larger size shims for the mech.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

You could wrap a sinlge layer of insulation tape round the seat tube if you're really that bothered.

but then again your frame will be subject to all sorts of stones and crap being thrown up at it when you ride, just like the rather large chunk of trail rock that hit my down tube with a dull THUD on Sunday.
  • As long as the mech is tight enough not to move around, it won't damage the frame.

Anyway, frames get scuffed and chipped all the time. Don't worry about it, or you'll start avoiding riding hard for fear or scratching your bike!
