Hi guys!
Considering a 2008 Commencal Meta 5.5.1 to buy as a longer travel bike for the Alps later this year.
How is it, basically? Is the suspension design working as well as they say? Does it climb well, etc?
Thank you.

My mate has the 07 and he absolutely loves it.Climbs well, descends like a DH and isn't bad to look at.Every commy owner i've spoken to has nowt but praise for them. The 08 has the Orange/Marin style swinger instead of the 4 bar job on the 07,some reviewers said it wasn't quite as stiff, but i wouldn't let that put you off.
  • I've only had mine a week so it's a bit early to say. It does climb well - one of the reasons I went for it. After a hardtail it feels very plush!

Off to a trail centre at the weekend so will be giving it a good test then.

If you are looking at a certain deal on-line I wouldn't leave it too long.

You are going to hear almost nothing but praise from them on this forum, if you do a quick search you should turn up lots of recommendations and thoughts on them.

I own an 09 VIP and it's superb. Commencal beefed up the frame this year so it weighs slightly more than the 08 but is stiffer. Climbs well but comes alive on the downs.

Indeed, thank you all for your views. I think I'm going to go for it, I am in 'talks' with the shop.

    Definitely a wise move :)

I've had my 5.5XT just under a year now, I absolutely love it to bits. With all the demo days around at the minute I've tried lots of other similar bikes out, it's still my favourite by far, every ride leaves me grinning.

I've had my 2007 5.5.1 for nearly two years now and it's great, particularly when the going gets rough! Don't delay, buy today!

  • Had a brilliant weekend in North Wales & loved the way my new bike rode. If you're still pondering I don't think yu'dregret buying one.

Rode my hardtail on local routes last night & was a bit of a shock!

is it better than the trek remedy though?

    "better" how? It's different.

I'd rather have my Meta, I bought it as more of a trail bike. Some people slacken them up and fly down DH courses, some people use lightweight components and race endurance races. It's literally that versatile.
