deore xt shifter problems

this is my first post,so i hope i do not offend/faux paus.
My bike(stumpjumper m2 96ish) has combined brake/gear deore xt shifters,i am unsure of the model number but they may be period and are definitely before them silly windows started appearing...
any ways, recently when using my thumb to up shift the rear derailleur, the lever makes a nasty clicking noise and depresses very easily with no gear change, however if i push up vertically on the lever whilst depressing,it sometimes grips and upshifts.
As a general repairer of most things i am reluctant to pay someone else to fix it,yet i cannot find the model number/pdf on shimanos webshite, and dont want to unscrew the wrong screw,as i have done many a time
so if anyone else has had this problem or can point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated by myself

spray some cleaner in where the cable goes and then some lube.
But i have a feeling that the ratchet is worn out."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Yep, had exactly the same problem with my XT shifters. Rachet gone, new shifter required.
How old is it? If it`s less than a year should be able to get a new one under warranty0
