Just a note to say hello, I've been a member of the road forum for some time and mainly ride road these days, however I've dragged my old MTB out of the back of ther garage and given it a sprucing up recently:

I used to live in Huddersfield and biked a lot there - with proper hills surrounding you, it was easy enough to get a day;'s proper riding in. That was around 1989/1992 time, when I had an ex-rental Specialized Rockhopper comp which was a lovely bike but totally trashed.
So I have had a few hours in Thetford Forest, but nothing more exciting yet, look forward to making a few more ports soon.
Thanks

Hi Paul,
your story is similar to my own!!! I was born and brought up in Batley and spent many a happy Sunday cycling around yorkshire (mainly) with the local CTC section. Went off to uni and cycling became just a way to get to college and then got lost altogther. Three years ago at 38 and with a massively expanded waistline and the threat of drugs to treat my hypertension I returned to the bike (reading Lance's autobiography and watching the TdF helped). Got cheap roadbike comuute 10m to work, that became a very expensive roadbike for sprotives but recently the MTB has been more prominant. Waist now looks good compared to most other 42 yr old and the blood presuure is always normal.
I now live near Cambridge and Thetford forest is somewhere me my lads will be going soon. Along with many other places!!!
Might see you there!!

Thanks all!
Yep, those were the days!
I attempted to use Bikely to draw one of my old routes, which was a killer, but you can only seem to draw a route that uses known roads! What use is that to a mountainbiker???
Well for those of you who know that area, it was from Huddersfield, down Lockwood Rd to Honely, then a long and thrilling track through Honley Woods for about 2 miles. You came near Meltham, and from there a long (2 miles?) slog up Wessenden Head rd, which is roadie territory really and a real killer on a fat tyred mtb. From there, northwards on the Pennine Way to Marsden, down to the main Manchester Rd and back into town, whereafter a foaming lake of beer was sought.

Have you tried this site to map your routes? I believe you can save them to share and you are not constrained to roads. I use it occasionally to figure out the distance I have biked (when my computer goes tempremental on me) and the elevation of the ride.0 -

Hi all, just a final update on this ongoing project. You may recall the retro mtb I inherited, and the intention to respray and restore it. Well it's almost there. Here's a pic of the original, and below it the results. It's been restored as a road-going, wider tyred, comfortable bike that hopefully should be up to a bit of touring. You can als read a detailed log of the restoration at:

so, the original bike....
