What my bike sounds like

I reckon my Fulcrum Racing 7s sound like the Aston Martin Vantage. Yes I really did just say that. I really did.

What do you think your bike sounds like!?

Mine's like a ghost now - it just floats along with faint noise emanating... Lovely.

I guess my Fulcrum 3s must sound like a newer, better, more expensive Aston Martin Vantage :)

Anything more that utter silence really annoys me (other than the gentle hum of rubber).

I really hate it when I can hear somebody with a noisy bike because I generally suspect it's my bike making the noise.

When it's all adjusted and maintained and cleaned and oiled properly, it's "hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm" of tyre on tarmac. Fantastic sound.

Most of the time, it's a combination of rattles, clicks, squeaks, clunks, chain dragging against out-of-alignment front mech, etc....

    Hmm..........

It depends on what I'm doing........

If I'm pedalling smoothly I can get away with the hum of rubber on road and a odd pinging noise that sounds like something hitting my rear spokes.........still can't figure out what the feck is causing this one!

If I hit a bump or turn the bars a bit I get a creaking noise from my gear cables - I'm sure it's these and not the headset, again a bit of an odd one but it's only an occasional noise!

If I stop pedaling I get a nice clicky-clicky noise from the Aksium's freewheel :-)

Of course none of this really matters as I can't hear sh!t over the noise of the wind in my ear and the traffic in town!

Hmmm.... when I'm on it I would have to say: like a gay asthmatic warthog, missing its inhaler while having dry sex with its boyfriend.

I think that manages to encompass the agonised breathing pattern that usually accompanies my commute

The bike itself is VERY quiet. Or rather I THINK it is... i can't really tell over the aforementioned gay asthmatic warthog missing its inhaler while having dry sex with its boyfriend noise.

My Bowery sounds like a ninja. Pretty much silent, creeps up and whooosh... you don't know what hit you... but there's a black thing disappearing into the distance ;)

The not so rubbish roadie sound similar to one of those rotating football clicker rattle things when freewheeling.

Yet another for the sounds like the footie clacksons. All from the fulcram 7's which as a wheel I love but horrible noise, next time around might have to go shimano which should be quiet

Am I missing something, or is the noise created by loud freewheels actually dissipating some of the energy provided to your wheels in sound form, decreasing power and increasing friction against the pawls?

Then I guess my Fulcrum 0's must sound like a Pagani Project C9 or a Murciélago LP640 Roadster.

And my FFWD's like a Bugatti Veyron Sang Noir

Oh no no all sorted now.

The Prince isn't the quietest of bikes on rough tarmac though. Internal cable routing doesn't help! But on smooth tarmac it just ghosts along.

It's not decreasing power, since, necessarily, if you're freewheeling you're not pedalling.

Point taken, but the friction thing/converting energy to sound aspect does, right?

louder freehubs will slow you down faster technically, but that is insignificant compared to the rolling resistance of the tyres, friction in the bearings and air resistance.

If you wanted to test, if you have removable pawls, try rolling down a hill with and without them, negligable difference.
  • Wot he said.

You can't hear my bikes. The sound wave that they produce arrives after they do. 8)

Or invert 2 bikes, one with campag style and one with Shimano and give the rear wheels a spin! We did this with my Fulcrum 0's and 2 pairs of pretty quiet Mavics, the Fulcrums outspan the Mavics by several minutes - I thought we'd cracked perpetual motion at one point. In reality it makes no difference, although Tom and Will (Mavic owners) were so concerned they actually asked a Mavic mechanic about it! His response was a typically Gallic shrug and a ""Pas de probleme."

A tin full of bolts with the odd click once per pedal revolution although that could well be my knees.

I'm hoping the clatter and clanks coming from my drive is because the road surface is so poor and not an impending failure.

I'm worried about my Fulcrums, they spin but there is no sound except the feint sound of the hub trying to make a noise....
