New cassette, old deraileur

I have recently had to replace my rear wheel and take the leap from 7 speed freewheel to a freehub wheel, this is where it my set-up gets a little unusual. Due to a lack of money I am running my old 7 speed shifter with a new 9 speed cassette and the question is;
Am I at risk of damaging the chain/cassette/derailleur in this set-up? as the shifting seems to be OK across 8 of the gears with one being skipped in the center with the smallest not being used.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

How much lack of money? A cheap 9 speed shifter should be easily available on ebay.. Possibly an LX one from somewhere like CRC/ Wiggle etc...?
£14 from CRC for LX or if Sram, £30 for X7....

Yes I have a 9 speed chain. like I said; the shifting is now perfect on the 7 gears that I can get the derailleur to shift to.
By lack of money I mean spending £50 is a concern (thatys almost a quarter of this months mortgage)
I am purely worried about the possibility of damage to any of the components, as I am more than happy with the performance until I can afford 9 speed shifter/derailleur.0 -
You don't 'need' a new derailer. However the 9 speed shifter will be far better. You will never be perfectly in gear using a 7 speed.
You won't cause any damage though.0 -

Brilliant! That's what I needed to hear! Just need to watch my money for a few months so I can spend the £50ish on some lovely Deore...0 -
If it is skipping a bit, it will wear quicker though.
The sooner you get the shifter the better really.
Also 9 speed chains don't take too well to old 7 speed chainrings.0 -

I have recently upgraded my front chainring (only use the one) to a 9 speed one so that should be fine. Cheers for all the 'heads-up's Supersonic!0
