Ive been out on cold days wearing a cycling top and my windproof/waterproof coat, also it tends to catch the wind too on those blustery days - ok i was warm but i have to admit i do sweat a little bit. Now ive seen people on those days wearing a jersey - how do they keep you warm, are they lined ? The last thing i want to be when im out is cold so what do you wear to keep you warm but at the same time not make you sweat buckets and then get cold due to the sweat.

Merino base layer (Endura) under waterproof or windprrof...superb piece of kit, will keep you warm even when wet.

I discovered that the best way to sweat less is to buy better gear, that does not reatain the sweat.

I suffer from asthma so for me it is extremely important to keep my chest warm, yet that's where most garments place their zips.

So, the first thing is to get gear that allows sweat and heat to leave your body from other places, like armpits and mid/upper back.

Also, I discovered that if I wear tight fitting base layers, they make me sweat less: so a lined jersey or windproof outer layer is better for me than a soft shell jacket.

It's about layering, the first thing is a decent wickable base layer, then it's a case of the correct jersey for the conditions. Take a look at the Assos range, not suggesting you buy Assos but as an indication of the different types of jerseys you can get for different conditions. They do jerseys that will cover the temp range from zero upwards with specific combinations aimed at specific temps.

  • I tended to sweat a lot when wearing a baselayer + windproof jacket even in lower temps. Have changed to wearing 1 or 2 base layers + jersey and now much less sweat.
2 Wheels or not 2 wheels..That is not in question.

Castelli Espresso (my best purchase ever ) plus 1 base layer (merino or helly hansen) for temps above 5-6 degress.

I sweat like a pig and nothing will prevent you from sweating but a good base layer doesn't make you feel uncomfortable or cold when it is wet. My main prob with sweat is from my helmet and nothing that I wear under it really stops that - it just delays until it becomes saturated and then the constant drip starts. Most annoying.

Waterproof jackets are the most annoying thing in the world and I use a lightish one with full arm pit zips which I leave open and that way and just layer up below it get the desired level of warmth. Big thick waterproof cycling jackets and sweaty people just don't mix or at least me and them don't get on.

If it is too far below zero, I wait until later in the day to go out due to ice.
If I go out later and its 0 to 6 degrees, wera tights, base layer, arm warmers, summer top and assos winter jacket and possibly assos windstopper jacket for warm up then take it off after few miles.
Between 6 and 12 just tights, base layer, arm warmers and assos winter jacket, or maybe base layer, summer top and intermediate top.
Above 12 just base layer arm warmers and LS top and tights.
I dont ride in shorts until 18 or above.

I try and stick to wearing only two layers, at this time of year that's mostly a long-sleeve merino base layer and a windproof (e.g. gore phantom) or waterproof softshell (e.g. endura stealth). Windproof is good down to about freezing and the waterproof below that, both work OK as it gets warmer as you just undo the zip.
