i had to go to lake maggiore with work last year, i was there for a week and on the last day i found out that it's a cycling mecca from milan and surrounding areas.
it has a cable car up the mountain, when i was there it was 20 euros for an all day pass, it takes about 25 mins on the cable car and it's about an hour and a half of downhill. I didn't ride it myself but looking at the pics in the cafe at the bottom and talking to the guys there it looks awsome, with some huge jumps, drop offs and north shore type stuff.
you could hire bikes there, orange patriots etc, the town is either called stressa or baveno i can't remember but they're right next to each other and plenty of campsites there.
i can't find it on any websites though, but take my word for it, it looks awsome. worth a look if you're passing.0 -

Pila (above the city of Aosta) is well worth a visit. Quite DH orientated, but some slightly more sane singletrack as well. Some info on our site: www.whiteroomchalet.com/pilamountainbiking.htmMountain bike holidays in the French Alps - www.whiteroomchalet.com0
