I'm rapidly blowing my budget on my new hardtail build which so far has so very nice light bits of bike bling! Money is getting tighter and I'm after an xc brake on a budget. Light weight if possible. Whats the general penalty of mech vs hydralic brakes? Must be a disc brake and open to suggestions, don't mind 2nd hand either.

What shifters are you using just out of interest?

Set of Juicys are fairly light weight.

Then there's the SLX or Hayes for a similar price at Merlin. I really didn't get on with mechanical, I'm not sure of the weight difference but I didn't ever get the performance even vaguely like a decent set of hydraulics.

Its currently going to be a singlespeed so no shifters, (on one scandal frame, chris king headset, rockshox reba 100mm forks, easton carbon seatpost and bars, on one own brand stem and saddle) so far! Brakes wheels and a few other bits to go!

Having done some further reading probably want hydraulic brakes would love3 avid exilir but way too much money, maybe some lowend juicy's/?
