I do like commuting on a bike, especially an MTB. Unfortunately the theft of mountain bikes tends to discourage me from doing a shopping, social or gym runs on the Kona or Felt bikes.
As a compromise I bought a used Diamondback M40 through the local classifieds. It was advertised for £100, but I got it down to £80
Since buying it I've had the rims trued, fitted Schwalbe Big Apple 2.3 tyres with Panaracer Kevlar belts between tubes & tires and eXotic carbon rigid forks. Other additions are a WTB Race V saddle, Magura HS33 Raceline hydraulic rim squeezers and a Garmin GPS mount
Yes, it's become a project and to get it the way you see it now has cost me just under £350 including the bike itself, so not too shabby on the financial side. I now use it commute whenever possible and yes I do lock it up too
It's a pleasure to ride and I also use it to do some roadwork too. I have got quite a few compliments on it from the (pedal posse) kids at the Sports Centre where I go to gym
Other changes to come are a shorter stem and flat handlebars. A paint job, perhaps candy apple white? Lastly, some new rims as the front rim has a slight dent in the brake surface which feeds back to the lever and annoys the bejeezus out of me.
