Hi guys,
Im in the market for a 26" wheelset to stick on my overweight kona coiler. iv got a small budget around £250. I need 20mm front axel to fit my 66's. I would like to aim at aggressive XC strength wise as Im only 65KG and don't ride too hard these days. Iv shoped around and the hope hoops -5.1 or 4.2 on pro2 seem like a reasonable buy - what do you guys think??

mavic 719 on pro II from merlin cycles with dt spokes comes in just under £2500
-
yeah spotted them too, are they a better rim/build than the swiss rims on pro2?0

Merlin make some fabulous wheels, mine are going strong despite some serious abuse, and they'll take a 2.3" tyre.
I've not got much experience with dt rims, I've always used mavic and they've been trouble free so why change?0 -
I'm yet to bend my Merlin 717s on XT hubs despite being a talentless clumsy oaf, I'm just a wee bit lighter than you. I swithered between 717 and 719 for ages but then I discovered that the 717s are rated OK for 2.3 tyres, thanks to Supersonic- the website says 2.1 but the sticker on the wheel says 2.3 as long as you don't run high pressures. Which you wouldn't anyway. Your budget would allow for 719s on Hopes I think... Or for that matter 819s on XTs.Uncompromising extremist0

i've got 717s with xts and deore.the deore were only £100 a couple of years ago from merlin, thev've been excellent as mr burns would say0

Wow, £250 a 'budget' set!
Youd don't have to have the rear hub the same as the front of course. Could save a load by getting an XT rear.
Or a pair of DMR Revolvers, Halo Spin Doctor, Nuke Proof Generator oif want to save some cash on a pair of Pro 2.0 -
hmm interesting guys,
so the XT hubs are not 20mm spindles though are they? that would mean saints, then that would also mean new rotors ontop - or do they have a 6 bolt saint hub??
so with the general consensus being mavics over swiss would you guys be happier with a pro 2 custom build than a deetrax wheelset?0 -
You can get a 20mm version XT hub.
Custom builds tend to work out better value, and a handbuilt too.0 -
really? where from i cant see one with crc or merlin??0
