I've just got some lovely stewing steak and I want to make a hot pot. Its my one and only opportunity as the GF hates hot pot, but her mate is over so their getting a take away.
But how the hell do you make one
water, stock, cubes of meat, chunks of a variety of veg, simmer for 3 hours??
edit: maybe i'm using the wrong term... A stew would be more like what I want to make

Just phoned me mum as well think I have a basic idea. I'll be sad and post a photo up of the results later0 -
buy a colmans casserole mix for about 70p, add 2 onions, a potato, 2 carrots and cook for 1.5-4hours depending on how tender u want it to be, reducing the oven temp obviously if you're going to cook it more than the 2ish hours that the packet recommends. Stir every half hour.Start Weight 18st 13lbs March 2009

Final planned weight 12st 7lbs0 -
OK, nice and simple.....
1) Cut meat into cubes.
2) Put cubes of meat into plastic bag with a couple of tablespoons of flour and plenty of ground pepper. Shake.
3) Heat some oil in a frying pan over a medium heat, and fry the meat in small batches until brown. Place meat in casserole or oven-proof dish.
4) Add a small piece of butter to pan. If you've got some bacon, fry it until the fat runs. Place in casserole.
5) Fry a sliced onion or two until soft. Add to casserole.
6) Add chunks of veg of your choice, give all a good stir, add just enough stock to cover (a glass of red wine or guiness would not go amiss here, maybe a sprig of rosemary). Place on hob and bring gently to simmer. Season with a little salt and pepper (you can add more if necessary later, but too much can make the meat tough.
7) Place in low oven (120-130 degrees C) for 2-3 hours. Stir occasionally. Half-an-hour before the end, remove lid and add dumplings.
For dumplings: 2oz self-raising flour, 2oz plain flour, 2oz suet (veg or beef), plenty of salt and pepper. Mix to soft dough with a little cold water, roll into balls and drop into stew.0 -

Student? hmmm...just forget the Hot then.
Is hot-pot just stew?0 -
If you want to make the dumpings more interesting, then add som paprika to the dumping mix, they go orange!!!!
Don't add dumpings to the whole thing if you're planning on re-heating it for other meals, the flour makes it go a bit odd (like i wouldn't eat it odd...)
and once you put the dumpings in, don't take the lid of to check otherwise they go a bit funny (still tasty, but not as good)0 -
Slow cookers are great for this sort of thing. Though not essential.0

my uncle actualy gave me a slow cooker thing before I went to uni in my first year.. I was like "wtf would i need one of those for"!
now I know why0 -

you're going to end up mashed and not eating.
Drinking whilst waiting for stew/hotpot is lethal...0 -
