Has anyone done channel coast to Italy?

Hi,
Rather than re-invent the wheel I was wondering if anyone has already done channel port (Calais/Le Havre) to southern italy and could let me know their route?
Planned a route for my partner & his friend fom Calais to the Med a few years back but he's now planning to cycle to southern Italy next year.
They don't want to go through the alps but I was thinking that they won't want to do exactly the same route as before (Arras/Troyes/Dijon/Lyon/Avignon) either.
