Mountain biking on snow and ice

yesterday, I mountain biked on a trail that had a mix of dry dirt, mud, slushy snow, iced over streams, and some spots with up to a foot of snow. I was surprised that my basic mountain bike tires did well on snow and ice. Only the really slushy stuff and deep snow caused me problems. Breaking was a little bit of a problem too but other than that it was fun.
do you use wider tires or studded tread when riding on snow? do wider tires require a special fork?

Proper snow bikes use 4" tyres to give them flotation on snow but like mud, there are many different kinds of 'snow'.
