how does one "hit their knee on the aero bars...?" Whilst he was riding? Very odd, but he must have banged it hard enough for him to take the precaution of resting it instead of finishing the race. Too bad - just when the weather was getting nice.0 -

By getting out of the saddle and giving it full bore with the most solid, powerful upper body action you can throw at it. Since you're already pretty far forward in the saddle on a TT bike, it's really quite a common occurence. And it does hurt like a mother?%&*(#.0 -
IIRC Valverde did the same thing a couple of days after beating Lance Armstrong at Courchevel in the 2005 TDF.0

Bit more info from cycling weekly on how it happened:
http://www.cyclingweekly.co.uk/news/Bas ... 77461.html
"The Italian banged his knee on his tri-bars when his foot came out of the pedal. Basso was doing a lap of the course in Solvang when his chain jumped off of the drivetrain. When this happened his cleat came out of the pedal and his knee shot forward in to the back of his handlebars."0 -
I see Basso has been tested 8 times this year but says that is not enough. It's worrying as that can be read as there being doping opportunities for those who want to. Also, the ADAMS system only in English!
