Decided after reading adv's / disadv's of SPD's to go out and buy some over the flats i've been using. Wanted to know what pedals and shoes people were using.

Visit Lidl next thursday for their £20 shoes. Good VFM and better than Nike shoes I've been wearing.I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.0

M520 a great start. Cheap, tough and suprisingly not much heavier than XTR.0

Currently got Shimano M520 Pedals and M075 Shoes, both very good. Got them second hand off here for not too much.If you're not living life on the edge, you're taking up too much room!0

Just bought some Time Z Control pedals

To go with my Specialized BG Comps

First impressions are that the Time pedals are loads nicer than my old Shimanos, they have a really nice action - just as easy to clip in and a much easier, smoother, more natural exit. Supposedly more knee friendly too. I'd definitely recommend them and from the reviews I've read they sound like they last forever.
The shoes are great too, the ratchet system is a really good feature and makes them feel very secure. They were a little sore around the ankles for the first few rides, but now they're broken in I love them.0 -
Spesh BG Sport shoes - very comfy.
XTR Pedals - lovely.
Got some 520s on my commuter and they are fine, but I found the float a bit too loose on one of mine, even with the tension turned up. The XTRs also clip in and out a bit ncier, and clear mud and snow a lot better. Not much lighter though really0 -
I run m540s with MT31 shoes and am really happy with them.
Some reviews on here persuaded me to fork out a bit more cas fopr the 540 over the 520 as people have said they clear mud a bit better.Giant TCR advanced 2 (Summer/race)
Merlin single malt fixie (Commuter/winter/training)
Trek superfly 7 (Summer XC)
Giant Yukon singlespeed conversion (winter MTB/Ice/snow)

Ive used the M520s for years now with no probs ive never had a reason to spend more on XT or XTR pedals when the 520s perform aswell as they do for such little money.0

I'd agree M520's plus some of the cheapo Lidl shoes as you can try out the spd thing for £40, and spend more on better shoes if you find it's for you.
Personally I use 520's/XT pedals with Specialized Defrosters or Shimano MP660 -
Shimano PDM647 pedals with Simano M666 shoes on the Trek
Shimano M520 with Bontrager RL shoes on the Scott
Both easy to get in/out of - the 647's have the advantage of a bit more support for when things get a bit technical.
[back up Wellgo MG1's Flats for messing about with Shimano MP90'S]0 -
Shimano M647 pedals
With a shimano MT31 shoe! got them from decathlon for 21quid :-)
