What are your thoughts on this bike ride?

London - Paris bike ride

I just negotiated a competition where my department (i.e. me as I'm the only person in my department) is willing to pay the entire sponsorship for the first 3 people (have to members of my organisation) who send in 100 completed Members application forms....

Obviously I cannot go. But may try and get sponsored myself.

Obviously I'm not going to advertise the competition here and I'd rather not say who I work for online. I'm mentioning because I'm chuffed! I feel I'm doing my bit for cycling, social inclusion and mental health. Karma points surely!

You have to be some kind of mentalist to do that ride!

I cycled to Paris last year (albeit a shorter route, over 3 days) and it was brilliant fun. I'd recommend it to anyone from semi-noob to fit commuting level. If you're fitter or faster than that you'll find the limitations of having to wait at checkpoints for the backmarkers too frustrating.

The best thing about it, in retrospect, was the training, as it helped me lose 10 pounds and double my fitness, and justified buying the Focus :)
  • Give it a few years and they might complete that promised London - Paris cycle lane and we could just use that! I have suggested the L2P and I think G66 is doing it but the wife looked at me like I was mad! All she sees it as is 3 days away from her and the kids and having the hassle of trying to squeeze sponsorship money out of the tight fisted w4nkers I work for!

Lol, Bass you just made me think. I haven't told my girlfriend that I'll be going to ITB's on Sat/Sun...

I was thinking about the ride as it seems very well organised, I heard about it originally in a Cycling Plus mag. The major pull is that it is entirely free and if you complete my competition you won't have to worry about collecting sponsorship money.

Shame I'm the one who thought of it and cannot benefit from my own genius.

  • Here's the L2P link if you're interested - not cheap but really turns into a pro/am race at the front end so I've heard.

SC61.10a: FCN 3, with clip-on guards for winter
Uncle John: FCN ?? knobblies, or 'fat' slicks n guards

If you haven't tried these things, you should.
These things are fun, and fun is good.
  • It's not for a couple of weeks yet DDD, MARCH 8th! But yes I suspect it would be prudent to advise her your leaving before I arrive and we wave goodbye after loading your bike on the rack :-D
