As per title. I have ordered an Avid Juciy bleed kit and it comes with DOT 5.1. Have looked at the Avid site and my Juciy 3s have DOT 3 in them.
Question is do I need to remove all the DOT 3 before I use DOT 5.1 or can I bleed the brakes with DOT 5.1 while the DOT 3 is still installed or should I try and I just try buy some DOT 3 :?
Sorry if it's a noob question
Cheers

I don't know where you got the fact that Juicy 3's have DOT3 in them. The Avid web site quotes "For best results, use only Avid Hi Performance DOT Fluid. If Avid fluid is not available, only use DOT 4 or 5.1 fluid".
So unless you have changed the fluid to DOT 3 then you will be fine using the fluid supplied in the kit.0 -
Nope not changed any fluid. Thanks will use the 5.1 to bleed them.0

Dont bother with Avid fluid. Get yourself to Halfords and get the little 1/2 litre DOT 5.1 fluid. Its half the price and i ve found that it bleeds better than the avid stuff.0

Okay thanks for the heads up.0

Sorry if Im repeating things here but I need proper clarification.
I have exactly the same issue as OP, my bleed kit arrived today complete with a bottle of DOT 5.1 fluid. According to http://www.sram.com/en/avid/hydraulicdi ... ythree.php the fluid in the 3's is DOT 4.
Is it ok to mix 4 and 5.1 or does all the 4 need draining and totally re-filling with 5.1?

They can be mixed, but you will of course alter its spec.
Given you are bleeding the brakes anyway, might be a good idea to drain all the old stuff out and refill with fresh.0 -

Cheers for that.
Is it as easy as removing both grub screws and letting gravity take its course or will i need to attach the syringe to pull it out by pressure?0 -
More than one way of doing it - follow the instructions ;-)0

Basically a thorough bleed would push out all the old fluid out - just keep pushing it through! Draining the system then refilling can cause air to get trapped which then needs releasing.
Again, the instructions would give the recommended bleed method.0
