Is it me or are tensions rising between scooters and bikes at traffic lights?

Yes, cyclists RLJ, but, lately, scooters seem to be taking a good few liberties at traffic lights e.g. more creeping forward when the lights are red in addition to the filling of the "bike box", and I've seen more cyclists - myself included - getting distinctly testy with scooters.

A bit of SCR has developed between bikes and scooters westbound from Horse Guards to the bike box at the lights on Embankment just before the HoP.

  • On my route there is definitely more mbikes than cycles and things get a bit hectic at the main junctions but nothing testy so far.

Had an incident with a scooter guy in Camden the other day. In bus lane he got so close his elbow crossed over my arm. I gave him the look like I was just about to beat him senseless, he simply apologised looking terrified. Not of me and my intentions. I am sure he was simply terrified of being out there, not really knowing what he doing.

I got over it instantly and just battered on. Vespa boy.

I guess its easier for things to get unpleasant between 2 wheelers cos of the proximity and lack of a metal/glass bubble between us.

They can be annoying, but I tend to prefer them to be infront of me and then out of the way quickly when the lights change. I usually avoid filtering past them if there's no need for me to do so.

What does annoy me however is when a scooter overtakes you and then gets in your way because they get stuck attempting to fit through a gap that you could use. I've had that happen in unbroken cycle lanes before, which is even more frustrating.

Must add that I find motorbikes are usually ridden far more responsibly.

  • I've had some experiences like that of _Brun_ where scooters and the like have overtaken me and then blocked a gap which I could have made it through but then I get that with cars and other vehicles, even cyclists sometimes (poxy wide barred MTB's ;-)).

Yet at other times they have been very courteous to the point of shifting over to let me past when there is space or giving me more room at the ASL. I regularly do the same for them tho so if I've managed to filter to the front of a queue and see one caught in a position I wouldn't feel comfortable in I'll move to give them room and l always get a nod or muffled thank you.

+1. I would however exempt scooters ridden by Italian women from any criticism.

Scooter boys hate getting scalped though. I've had comments from several at lights - having passed them earlier. They don't seem to appreciate that it's possible for a cycle to get above 30mph.

I don't think most road user's realize that, it's not just limited to scooter users!

If they have a takeaway box on the back and an L plate I find they're more likely to be driven badly.

Well, having to spend time learning to ride a (generally) relatively more powerful and heavier motorbike, under instruction from a trained and qualified instructor, I can only say that motorcyclists have a greater appreciation for what their bikes can, and can't do, and the consequnces of screwing up.

Whereas scooter riders have how much instruction, and appreciation of the dangers of being out on the road exactly?

As to the topical point, I did see a fellow roadie, having been overtaken incredibly badly by a pizza delivery dickhed who then right hooked him, get his own back. The rather heavy thump to the bike box certainly got the PDB's attention, given the way he bounced!

Having had such a manoeuver performed on me before by a PDB I can only wish I'd thought of doing the same!

Quite. Like the little oik on those Domino's (who eats pizza at 8am FFS?) scooter who went through the ped crossing by the Duke's Head on the Lower RR.

@Christophe - sorry, mate, I know where you're coming from :) , but I can't excuse them, particularly when they've got a fancy schmancy handbag over one forearm.

Who the Fcuk eats Dominoes anyway. It's foul and disgracefully expensive. For the same prove as a large dominoes I can get a 1/2 metre wood fired pizza with FRESH toppings. Or get my local Sainsbury's to bake one up fresh in their pizza oven for £4.00...

i wonder if it's a knock-on effect from scooters being allowed in some bus lanes – perhaps the less legally-compliant/well-trained scooter riders are taking it as a signal that they can take greater liberties and there'll be less or no comeback cos they perceive BoJo as 'on their side'?

camden road is being particularly bad for scooter wideboys at the mo – i think that's more to do with roadworks at the top of the hill than anything else though...

  • Agreed on the Dominos... local places are far superior. Although I may in the past have been among the guilty parties ordering yummy breakfast pizza... Bloomin' students.. yeah.

Also, having done my CBT, I find it amazing that a 1-day extremely simple qualification allows people to drive a scooter or 125cc bike on the road for, what, 2 years is it? Small wonder a lot of them drive like total prats, and riders who have a full licence behave better.

I used to be a Dominos pizza delivery boy (Teddington branch). The dough and toppings are fresh i.e. not frozen. We drove 80cc bikes.

I would not buy Dominos either - over priced. But the toppings are technically 'fresh'.

    Bingo
  • This evening some guy on a scooter did a u turn & doubled back at a junction where I was turning right. He then has a go at me for his ridiculous manoeuvre that meant we both had to brake to avoid crashing.

It seems to me that most of scooters (& motor bikes) get in the ASL anyway. I wonder do they even know they're not meant to! It's always been like that the 1.5 years I've been riding. I've had a few occasions when I've been left somewhat stranded when they've filtered up ahead of me and blocked the ASL.
