So.. the time has come to change..
Orange are still charging 30 a month of 8mb Unlimited.
There's cheaper out there, but being in the hills (The Valleys) speed is somewhat lacking compared to fibre optic speeds in the cities. So far....

Any have Virgin Broadband, specifically the National Broadband Bundle 1 (8mb, with UK phone calls - unlimited download). What's it like? Orange has been rather good and reliable, but there's cheaper out there.

Cheers for the input. Rhys

they pissed me off big time by sticking a speed limit on my connection without warning me, because I'd exceeded my cap (15Gb / month is it?) no emails, nothing on their website to tell you how much you've used.

The cut took me down to dialup speeds (unusable) . I spoke to customer support, they weren't helpful (downright rude actually) and suggested I invest in some measuring software. They weren't willing to lift the cap before a week was up even for first time offenders.

    Bitter? Me?

Now I'm on Plus net. Downloads between midnight and 8am don't count towards your limit, there's a bit of their website that tells you how close to your limit you are and I think you get emailed warnings. Great speed, nice customer support, highly recommended.
  • got this in our uni house.

get the value pack, totally unlimited, plus atm they have a £40 credit offer!

can't fault them, very good service, doesn't seem to be capped at peak hours like our BT homehub is back hame.

VM are unlimited but do operate a policy of traffic shaping which kicks in when you hit a limit. The limit depends on the BB package you have.

I was paying £25 for 10mb BB alone which I was happy with but they called me and offered me TV & Phone for no more money so took the offer as I was about to buy a freview box for the TV I got from my Dad.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

They are a pain in the arse to deal with sometimes - we did the old "this other company can do us this for this amount, either match it or we switch" and they agreed to match the other price, took 3 months for them to amend their records and chainge the billing.

  • I had a NIGHTMARE with them. The service was ok but it took them at least 6 months to get the bill right. Spent hours and hours on the phone trying to sort it out but they just kept passing me from department to department. In the end I cancelled my direct debit so that they had to call me and I could finally get them to charge me the right amount!

I've had Virgin (Blueyonder) broadband for about 9 years and it has not been unavailable even once in all that time. It is for that reason alone that I have stayed with them, even if there might be slighly cheaper options available.
You only need two tools: WD40 and Duck Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the tape.

I've worked for both BT and Virgin on their Broadband support helpdesks.

Personally I would opt for Virgin as the speeds acheived are generally higher and more reliable than BT or any other copper lined connection.

The only issue you are likely to have with Virgin is with their traffic shaping policy. If you are going to do a lot of downloading then do it between the hours of 12:00 midnight and 7am.

Unfortunately when Virgin took over Blueyonder they decided in there wisdom to move all the technical support to India and as a result Technical support isn't a patch on what it was.

Coatbridgeguy got it about right, but what I would say is that on the whole Virgin Broadband connections are generally reliable.

Have to agree with this. Quite often they (Virgin) do something to the broadband connection - normally on a Sunday evening, which completely buggers up the wireless router - which then needs resetting. Obviously, Virgin no nothing of this...

They have also done something to the phone line which prevents me using a BT answer phone on there. It used to work perfectly. We even went out and bought a new one, after being told it was a problem with the device, not their line, only to have the same fault with the new handset. Which, surprisingly, works perfectly (as does the original) on the mother-in-laws BT line...

    El Capitano,

Do you connect to the Virgin network via a telephone line? IE does your router plug into a adsl filter and then the phone socket or does it plug into a cable modem.
