Damaged thread on crank

I have a Shimano R600 compact chainset but when I first put my pedals on I noticed the thread appeared to be breaking up and shards of metal were coming away. I managed to carefully clean it out and attach my pedals thinking I would just leave them in place after that. Now though, I'm taking my bike on a plane and need to remove the pedals.
Is my only option to buy a new chainset or is it a simple job to fix the thread. I don't want to go abroad and find I cannot re-attach my pedals so want to get this sorted now.
Also, if I was to replace the chainset, would I notice any difference if I upgraded to the R700 or Ultegra compact?

Youn need to get a Helicoil insert fitted - a decent LBS should have the tools - drill out the crank, tap the hole to take the insert and a steel insert inserted with the approporiate size of pedal thread. If stuck, Highpath Engineering can do it.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
