I have to admit to being a science geek so this is a warning for those of you attending the Marlborough Loop - don't allow me to get started on anything related to geology, geophysics, plate techtonics or any related subject such as astronomy or physics - people have been known to gnaw their own legs off out of sheer boredom or offered me money or beer to shut up 8) :D

I have no idea what you lot are talking about most of the time.

Trouble is, Sewinman, old boy, is that you've justyed outed yourself as a Geekolyte.

Who's the bigger fool? The geek, or the person who enjoys the company of geeks? :D:D:D
Swim. Bike. Run. Yeah. That's what I used to do.

    I wish.

I've got my beady eye on some new cases of wine having sampled the rather excellent TinPot Hut 2007 SVB last week. Sadly I'm all but broke this month thanks two 2 rather extravagant meals out and a distinct lack of commission last month, boo. At least ale is relatively cheap.

A geek freak! Who says I enjoy it eh!? I could be a sadist. I tell you what though - you guys have a LOT to say on some seemingly uncontroversial subjects.

Anyway I thought the definition of geek is to have online gaming friends. Anyone care to own up?

Actually physics is the simplest of the sciences - so long as you understand the basic laws - its theoretical physics that brings out the real geeks - subatomic particals - up, down, sideways, peppermint and the Higgs boson etc - I myself have a theory abouth the cyclical universe which I could be persuaded OW!..................

Now for the question to add.
Who is a geek and who is a nerd? And do people see a difference?

Oooooh I think that a lot of us just don't have a lot of work to do. That's certainly my issue.

Is it really not friday yet? Blast. The 6 bottles of syrah last night may not have been a good idea.

Alternative Method (for the "vi" challenged)

If using vi across a telnet connection is not your cup of tea, you can also simply copy the rc.mxoparam file across to a shared folder, edit it from the shared folder location, and then copy it back:
    cp /etc/init.d/rc.mxoinit /share/Public

(do edits from any editor ... as long as it supports unix text file format)
    cp /share/Public/rc.mxoinit /etc/init.d/rc.mxoinit

You may want to make a backup first...

Between 2. But preceded by several gin and tonics, and a few rum and oranges.

Te way this question is phrased makes "no" the only obvious answer. Cycling's for everyone! If you'd asked "are a higher proportion of cyclists geeks?" then this thread readily and affirmatively answers that question.

I don't think I could be friends or partners with someone who doesn't get geeky about certain things, since it's really just an enthusiasm and a desire for learning, both of which are absolute prerequisites (even if they're not about areas or subjects I share). Of course, they could take this enthusiasm too far and become either a bore or an obsessive, but I think everyone gets a free pass to be a bore about *something*, and bike bores I can usually enjoy interacting with*

*as long as they don't talk about how headsets or BBs work, wheelbuilding, different kinds of spanners or which sodding light to buy ;)

That is v impressive. I don't think I could hack that much. Be careful what you have for lunch otherwise you might find yourself nodding off at your desk. You should hurry home and have a few glasses to take the edge off and then sleep.

Is there ever a poll on here that you don't have an issue with re: wording, phraseology etc Blondie! :D

GAH! First in answer to this, yes I do understand it but it seems such an un-elegant solution. I'm by no means a vi geek but am rather impressed with it's power and I'm not affraid of the command line. The most glaring problem is the use of Telnet as opposed to SSH!!!

As has been said I think cycling is a hobby that anyone can get into but for those of the previously mentioned traits it holds an extra appeal.
Personally I love the feeling I get from being out on my bike as not only do I get a good amount of exercise I am also directly responsible for the amount of fun I have. If I put in a big effort, I reap big rewards in huge speeds, massive piles of scalps and a big buzz.
I love the fact that the whole mechanical process is so obvious as the geek in me loves understanding how things work. I'm fascinated by how certain frames are stiffer then others and what goes into making a good frame and incredible one. I've almost gone as far as memorizing the GI's on my bike and love checking my average speeds/distance and max speed on my cycle computer after each ride. Heck I'm even basing my next mobile phone purchase on the fact that I want to be able to use Sport tracker so I can plot my rides!!!

I am more worried that she does not even own a bike.

Although it was pleasing that she thought that I must be 'hugely brave' to commute..."yeah, its really dangerous out there... but you know, you just have to ride through the fear....but i don't really like to talk about it...its an inner strengh that I find hard to explain, its just there...." *looks wistfully into middle distance* :)

There is a infamous rivalry between the users of VI and emacs as they argue which is best :-)
