Does a larger tyre have more tread depth?

For example, does a 28mm tyre have a greater depth of rubber over a 23mm, assuming the same make and model?

  • Do you mean more depth of actual rubber or more tread depth?

Generally not - the tyre carcass will be bigger, but the thickness of rubber remains the same. You'd have to go to a heavier duty tyre if you want thicker rubber - but it'll weigh more, won't feel as responsive and need more energy to move it along

The rubber is the tread, grooves in the tread is the tread pattern.

Cheers Monty, that was my thinking as well.

I'm looking for something a bit more puncture resistant as the lanes I use for training are a mess. I've been using Michelin Muds but am manageing to puncture those as well, so any recommendations will be appreciated.

Michelin Mid is a cross tyre, so not really what I'd class as being robust - if you want bombproof, look at a Swalbe Marathon. If you want something lighter, the a Conti GP4Season - a bit 'dead' feeling though. My fave training tyre in a Michelin Krylion but currently hard to get. Some people swear by Conti Gatorskins, but they are pretty prone to cuts IME.
