Avid pads - wear rates

Hi all,

I've got a Marin MV 2008 with Avid Juicy Carbons on it. I do a fair ammount of wet, muddy riding and as such the pads on my breaks tend to wear quite quickly (sometimes surprisingly quickly). One thing Ihave noticed is that one pad always wears quicker than the other, so the inner pad might be half worn and the outer pad is on the metal - is this normal???

  • What type of pads you using?

The uneven wear could be due to disk warp or that your caliper position needs adjusting.

Sounds like a sticky piston or incorrectly setup caliper. Uneven wear is not normal.

    Hi all,

Thanks for the tips - it is happening on both the front and back and has been since new - I'll have a chat with the shop that supplied it.

ok - I've reset the pistons and pad adjustment and lined the calipers up to the discs - they were not central before. Will see if this helps...

If nothing else it should be easier pedalling without the pads touching the disks :D .

I have one question - I've been told of 2 ways to set the calipers up. Either so the disk is in the middle of the caliper gap OR to loosen the caliper post bolts, squeeze the brakes a few times and tighten it up where it stops. I've done the second way but the disc is slighty nearer one side of the caliper gap than the other - have I done it right?

Sounds to me like you have a slightly sticky piston. With the caliper loosened, when you pull the lever your getting slightly more piston movement on one side.
  • If you kept the brake on, whilst you tightened the caliper bolts, then yes you've aligned them correctly

After just setting up my Jucy 7's I found I had to repeat the process quite a few times to get them set-up just right.

^^ I must admit I often just align them by eye, seems to work as well as holding the brake lever in.
