it is unuseable when there are numerous identical threads started by impatient old people

Put it this way, you wouldn't know I've got a 5.5mbps broadband connection. This site loads slower than my first dial up 10 years ago. Especially in the evenings. I know it's only our hobby, but is it really acceptable? You tell me.
    Why not? My bikes.

  • I agree - I find it incredibly slow these days!

Shouldn't be this bad even though it relies on BT's link to the continent.

Probably becoming too popular for the servers OR it's your standard Open Source rubbish getting corrupted, SQL injection attacks or loads of spam traffic hammering the servers.

I've actually noticed a distinct slow down in all sites I visit lately, whether at home or work.

IP address for there servers and there located in Amsterdam...Yes Amsterdam

Errmm - I think, may be wrong, you're misreading that and that you're confusing the registrar (domain etc) with the servers themselves which are showing up as being in Bath, possible self-hosted which would make sense for a firm of Future's size. Plainly they have a few problems but even if the servers were in Amsterdam its highly unlikely it would cause any noticeable lag.
OR it's your standard Open Source rubbish getting corrupted

If you check what they are running on Netcraft then it seems like nginx as a webserver on OS X server. I'm not knowlegeable about either but both have clearly been gaining in popularity. OS X is definitely not open source by most sensible definitions but I suppose the extensive knowledge you have gained from your MSDN subscription would have taught you all about both their weaknesses?

My guess is that like most performance problems, there is no one cause and that a combination of small network, hardware and software bottlenecks can at busy times, throttle the system. Its not an easy problem to solve, particularly on a high-traffic live site. I'm not sure if they are many other phpBB sites that carry this sort of traffic?
