Formula Oros or Avid Juicy 7s

I am upgrading from LX.

Things I like about LX, have only had to bleed them once in three years.
changing pads is a piece of cake, nothing seems to go wrong.

I'm not great at fettling and don't want to have brakes that take a lot of fiddling with.

I hear great things about both sets of brakes but like the look of the Avid Juicy 7s

Can anyone give me any advice on these two or options?

Thanks,

E

  • If you want reliability get the oro's, if you want the better brake IME get the juicys.
Juicys can be troublesome, some are, some aren't, I had lots of trouble to begin with on my juicys, but since then have had 2.5+ years trouble free, but I find them a nicer feeling brake, with a much better lever, and a touch more powerful than oro's.
The oro's generally are known to be very reliable and consistent, and on balance should be the most reliable of the two by proportion. I had to bleed my k18 out of the box though as it was spongy and lacked power even when the pads were bedded in, but since has been fine. I must say, nice brake, good power and modulation, just a poor lever design. The juicy just feels better and stops more eagerly, even with a smaller rotor (185 juicy, 200 oro) though at really high speeds the larger oro wins, but it takes some going to get there!

    interesting.

Never had any problems with my Juicys (first 7's) but have had a few issues with the Oro´s (Warrenty fixes) but i would say the Oros are the better brake.

  • Hmmm... tis!
When I ride me FS I don't have any issues with the oro really, other than the crap lever, but when I go out on the HT and use the juicy's I always end up marvelling at how strong the brake feels, and how nice the lever is to use.
Perhaps you like a softer feeling brake and aren't too fussed about the lever?
Do you have the k24's though? maybe the bite adjust makes a big difference, I find there is way too much free travel on the lever before bite, menaing it is too far out for grabbing and too far in for braking, a quick squeeze of the lever with no wheel in brings the pads in and cuts travel, but is short lived, as the pads wear they soon go back to normal.

yes i have 2 sets of the old 24´s and am about to build a new ride with the new k 24´s on.

just love the squeeze the hands and you stop feel.

But I also know people that prefer the feel of the Avids.

strange as the Avids were designed by Formula and are now made by Tectro for Sram.
