HI all, I've managed to wear out the brake blocks on my SS and I need some more. The brakes are Shimano Tiagra's. Can anyone recommend some decent blocks for those brakes for commuting? I'm hesitant to use the Shimano ones again as they have lasted me about 2 months of riding instead of the more usual 5-6 months. 6 sets a year would be ridiclious!

    Koolstoppers.

I've heard good things about Swisstop I think it is but I've never used them.

I'd steer clear of the fibrax black ones, they lasted me about 6 weeks  god only know what they've done to my rims. The Kool Stop Salmon pads work very well in the wet and lasted about 4 months, they're very good in the wet as well

Does anyone know where you can buy the Kool Stop Salmon insert pads for V-brakes? I can't find them anywhere, I think they've been discontinued.

You can get the all-in-one salmon brake blocks and you can get the dual-compound insert pads, but the salmon insert pads seem to have been withdrawn from the range.

Don't most pads wear down much quicker at this time of year anyway due to all the crap on the road?

Yep, the salt and grit just turns into a grinding paste, ready to destroy you drive train. It's just cost me a new chain, cassette, front ring and pads. Some pads wear quicker than others, and the KoolStop range seem to be better than most. I've used them on mtb's and road bikes and not a lot else can touch them.

Thanks all. Any idea which of the KoolStop ones would fit the Shimano Tiagra brakes? I.e. these ones: http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/Cycle/7/Shima ... 360027351/

Most of the ones on Wiggle seem to be for V-brakes :?

  • @WB - If you already have the metal cartidge inserts you can just grab the pads, such as these:

Get the salmon version as they are much nicer in the wet and still excellent in the dry (if it evers dries up that is)

If you haven't got the metal blocks that take the cartridge type pads you'd be best off getting a set of those, that way you can get the brakes all aligned and don't have to fiddle with them when you need to replace the blocks next time round as you just simply slide out the old block and slot in a new one! The pad itself it held in with a small bolt on the side.

I'm currently using a set of the dual compound Koolstops on my road and they are behaving very nicely!

Thanks mate, that's what I thought. However, Wiggle don't appear to do the metal blocks, just the inserts which is plain odd. Chainreaction don't stock them either. Am I looking for the wrong thing or just being thick

  • I really rate the ashima triple compound pads.
