    Have you considered Planet X?

Here's a review of the Mthyos:

I've been meaning to recommend the planet-x pro sl (especially after the sucessful first outing on sunday) but I'm fairly sure their Bike2Work scheme doesn't play nicely with cycle scheme

I don't like the look of the Planet X... I know, I know. (You're gonna tell me its nearly or completely the same bike as the Dolan only with Planet X written on it).

If GB Cycles in Croydon (who are with Cyclescheme) still stock Planet X (the guy didn't seem to fond of the white one he was trying to 'get rid of') then I think that's a way around it.

That's ok DDD. Details are important. If you don't like it, you don't like it. Spend the money on something with no compromise or regets, aesthetic or otherwise :)

Luciano, just off Northcote Road, near Clapham Junction.

Well, they do their own scheme, but I believe I was the very last person to get a P-X on Cyclescheme. Cyclescheme even cancelled my voucher mid-transaction due to a "system incompatibility" (they reinstated it after a haggle). I think Cyclescheme only deal with places that have a shop front - GB Cycles could be the answer though.

DDD - I've owned a Mortirolo and it's a wonderful bike. I know you would love an Iozard but if it's no in budget then I'd suggest you at least test ride a Mortirolo.

Definitely get sized up, if you are going to drop £1000 + you want to make sure you get the right bike. I strongly recommend you test ride the contenders as well; you might love the "look" of one bike but find that you just don't feel "right" on it. Not the sort of thing to find out after spending the money...

Finally, someone else recognises that the Planet X is a truly ugly bike! It's a horrible shape - a BMX basically - with lumpen tubes. When people compare it to a Focus it's like uh no, the Focus is pretty - I assume you've considered the Focus options, DDD?

I don't think the P-X is pretty, but I don't see the BMX in it. Its a compact frame...

    Yes, Focus is prettier.

Focus won't be available on Cyclescheme though.

What about a Wilier Thor (available at De Ver with Ultegra or Baines with Centaur)?

    Or a Kuota Kharma?

Whatever you go for, remember to ask (a) what warranty the manufacturer offers on the frame, and (b) whether the manufacturer has a crash replacement policy.

  • FWIW I quite like the look of the Planet X, but then I'm rather short so a compact frame would probably suit me better!
Fully agree with JA tho, if I was spending this much on a bike I'd be test riding them ALL until I was certain that I liked the one I was buying!

To throw something a bit different into the mix, does anyone have experience of the Pedal Force frames from the US? I realise that fitting may be a problem.

OK so I took a trip into DeVer to buy a GP4000S for the rear wheel and a couple of rubber innertubes...

They offered me a £650 Aluminum TCR frame (anodized - do these even exist outside of DeVer) for £350  . - I told you, you can't walk in there without being offered something at an exceptional discount....

Very nearly walked out of it because it was freaking light and nice looking. Only thing was it's a medium and I think I need a large (my SCR is a large) although they insist and have always done even when I bought the M2 that I am a medium....

    Anyway.

After DeVer visit My list has now been narrowed to (I'm going to try them out):

    - Scott CR1 Team (105 groupset for £1399)

    - Argon 18 (Krypton or Radon) frame (but no one can tell me from experience the quality of these frames.

    - Giant TCR 09 (the frame looks amazing and the bottom bracket looks stiff/solid as hell)

Rightly though the guy in DeVer told me that at that price range stiffness is pretty much consistent and comparable.

I've got the CR1 Pro (Ultegra) - very good chasis, as JonGinge has mentioned before. The price is around 200 quid cheaper than at Pedal On too.

Have a look through this thread - it's a bit old, but may give you more insight (what's interesting is that the Canyon is worth a look:

Do a google search on Argon to see if it's reviewed elsewhere or on BR somewhere.

  • Argon 18 has a small but devoted following on weight weenies, and as far as I can tell, no detractors (although the number of stickers Argon 18 put on their frames draws some comment. I guess you can remove these). There are a lot of guys there who know a lot about bikes.

Any of those three would go in my "yes" column. The Giant would be third, simply because of the death wobble I had with my TCR. It's not an isolated problem, but Giant may haven't bulked up the head tube since I bought. You can test for it fairly reliably with a shake test while riding on the flat.

Btw, did you check the Kuot Kharma out?

Thanks CJCP, read the thread but left me confused....

@Greg, checked the Kuota out online, not sure what to make of them tbh.

Read some more reviews on the Argon, they're supposed to be stiff, good quality, deliver a comfortable ride, affordable but on the heavy side for carbon... which isn't that much an issue given the level I'm at and is gonna be lighter than my SCR. Also the price means that I could get a build with Ultegra components.

    Kuota are beautiful. mmmmmmmmmm!

Get the best frame you can afford at this point. You can always upgrade other parts as and when.

    True and true.

(I have a good feeling about the Argon frames)

I could go for a Argon 18 Krypton and load it with Ultegra. Though that would feel like I was compromising on the frame to get the groupset I really want.

I could at a push get the Gallium frame with 105 and an upgrade to Ultegra, later, would be more managable - which is your point I guess.

I now need to look at the Kuota.

The Kuota Kredo is a stunner:

but JE James have the excellent 08 Kharma on sale (frame only) for £699. £300 saving...

And Merlin have 2009 Ultegra SL for £500...

    OK

Read the review and it would seem the Kharma Kuota is the shizzle!

I phoned Luciano Cycles (only shop in London I could find that sells these bikes and does cycle scheme) and was told that they sell the 105 version for £1,500. :? I dunno, £1,500 for a 105 bike (despite the frame) doesn't sit well with me. Dunno why... just doesn't... I take the point that most other offerings come in at just under this price but they still manage to undercut it...

SO my list thus far is:
    Argon 18 (Gallium or Krypton)
    Condor Squadra(sp) or Italia(sp)
    Giant TCR (2009)
    Scott CR1 Team
    Dolan Mythos
    Kuota Kharma

Truthfully, my real imaginary bike list would be this

Yeah but look above mate, you can get the 08 Kharma frame for £700 and Ultegra SL for £500, so that's £1200. You can stick your Fulcrums on it and pay Dever £100 to build it up and jobs a good 'un. All in for £1300 or so!
