I'm looking to go down and watch a couple of stages of the TdF this year with a friend. We are going to drive down and camp to try and save some money.
Can anyone recommend a good campsite near the Col du Tourmalet area (La Mongie).
I've never done this before and I want to try and get it right because we are looking at doing some riding as well so we don't want to be miles from the action.

There are no 'campsites' at La Mongie, just the whole of the side of the mountain! There's nothing at the top of the Tourmalet apart from a small cafe whereas LaMongie is a couple of Km down the hill. You main problem might be finding somewhere to park your car - get there the afternoon before and simply choose your spot. Remember this is the high mountains in summer - it can vary from 30 degree plus to driving rain and snow in one day - be prepared.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • I know that I won't be able to camp on the mountain!
I wanted to know of any campsites in the surrounding area. A base if you like for a couple of days watching/riding.
    Sorry if I wasn't clear.
