Thames water...I'm a bit confused by the bill :(

Ok, we moved into our house (4 students) on the 1st august.
1st December we get a water bill for £250.
We just got another water bill that covers the house from 1st april 2009 to 31st march 2010 for around £400!
Now we move out the end of July, so should we still have to pay up until 31st March 2010?!
Seems a bit steep!
