It's true! Racing really is better without radios

good...fantastic to see how one team struggles to control the race without race radios...pls will the UCI ban them. TDF's ASO will have seen how exciting the stage was today...puts more of the pressure on riders and smart tacticians like Bruyneel are gagged to some extent0 -
Not really. Eurosport were getting regular updates and time checks. They knew who were in the chase group and how the time gap was being cut........
.......and it was all being relayed from the Astana team car.
Maybe it was only all the other teams experiencing technical difficulties."Science is a tool for cheaters". An anonymous French PE teacher.0 -
"On the second KOM he let me pull a little and then totally smashed it on the big ring and left us for dead. That was impressive."

You must have been watching a different Eurosport to me! The timings were all over the place and they were confused as to who was where and were guessing from a rain splattered helicopter shot as to who was in the bunch - in fact they were using Bruyneel's vaguely puzzled twitterings as a guide to what was happening half the time including the exasperated:# On the last climb of the day. Radio Tour gives us all kinds of different information. That definitely needs to improve. #atoc about 15 hours ago from TwitterBerry
# The information over the official race radio is COMPLETELY messed up. Really confusing. #atoc
Even as they entered the city the gap to Mancebo was showing three minutes on the on-screen graphic as the chasing group passed under the start/finish line 1:10 behind.
There also seems to have been confusion over when the final timings would be taken with the initial info at the start of the last lap before it was moved back to the start of the three laps. If it was with 1 lap to go Mancebo would have been caught by the group on those two prior circuits.0 -

Levi sees it differently
“It was just really bad communication,” Leipheimer said. “We didn’t know any of the time gaps. In the end, Chris Horner, we have to thank him, because he was really astute. He hit the gas. Then we started panicking, asking the other teams to help. They didn’t get it. They were like, why? We were like, Mancebo still has four or five minutes. Really? Nobody knew anything. Miscommunication and race radio, maybe, I don’t know. In the end they rode fantastic.”
MGGasping - but somehow still alive !0 -

AFAIK, they took the stage times based on the first or second passage over the line, before Nibali tore off up the roadMatrin van Nostrand wrote:guys, do me a favor, if I ever win a stage, make sure I don't start it with "DEAD" written across my genitals.'This week I 'ave been mostly been climbing like Basso - Shirley Basso.'0
