wheel convertion

I have a 21speed mountain bike and i want to change my wheels. iv seen some nice ones in hafords but the back wheel is an 8/9 speed could i put a 7speed freewheel on an 8/9 speed back wheel

    There are freewheel's & cassettes, which are not cross compatable.

    Freewheels are screw on and have the pawl mechanism in them & cassettes have splines & no mechanism in them

    you can put a 7spd cassette on a 8/9spd wheel with a spacer though

  • Measure the width of the rear axle from one locknut to the other, if it is about 126mm you can't use a 8sp> wheel as they are 135mm, if it is 135mm then you can use any rear wheel you wish, but will need a cassette to go with it as 7 speed 98% of the time are just freewheels screwed onto the hub, rather than a cassette which slides onto the freewheel (freehub) that is part of the hub not the gears. If going down this route you may want to cosider getting new shifters too and going 8 or 9speed, and don't forget the matching chain, but if you have to buy a cassette you will need a new chain anyway.
