I managed to smash my rear derailleur and dropout following a tangle with a branch,
Its a 2007 SRAM X0, (aluminium cage, not carbon)

I dont have a problem replacing it but in doing my research found that there are 3 sizes of the X0, Short, Medium, Long..

How do i know what size mine is? and while i am in the process of replacing it should i be looking at an alternative size for performance?.

Also any recomendations for alternative setups, I was looking at the new XT but have read its a bit of a fiddle to set up.

Thanks

  • How many rings are you running up front?

    General rule of thumb is:

3 rings up front = long cage

2 rings up front = medium cage

1 ring up front = short/medium cage depending
  • Ok, i have 3 up front so that would suggest the one fiited (from new)would be the longer..ahh..

based on your theory does the incorrect size ie, 3 rings up front and a medium cage have any detremntal effect on shifting?

    looked in the FAQ´s

It all comes down to the range of the mech and the range you want to cover.

using a med. cage would mean some combinations would not be usable due to a chain that is too long or too short depending on how you set it up.

  • I've used short cage rear mech (XTR) with three rings up front and 9 speed out back and never had any problems with changing gear!

Its not normal, or so I'm told.

    p.s. singlespeed.....

Shimano & Sram's definition of long/medium & short cage differ in length.

IIRC Sram are shorter than Shimano (might be wrong on that though, it could be the other way round!)

I run SRAM on all my MTBs.
All are 3 up-front, with 11-34 on the rear.

My newly built SX has a med X9, and that took some fettling to get shifting right. And even then, there are certain front/rear combo's where it won't shift smoothly.

If I were doing it again, I'd get the long.
But, the deal I was offered on the med was hard to turn down!
Stumpy, Rockhopper (stolen!) & custom SX Trail II - that should do it!
