Are cyclists cheating with Viagra?
We all know what Viagra is supposed to do. Now the question about the sex-aid drug also can help cyclists, uh, get up the mountain.
The Miami Herald reports that scientists at the University of Miami are studying whether sildenafil citrate can improve the performance of cyclists riding at high altitude. And this isn't some lark thought up by professors who want to use grant money to stay stocked up with the little blue pills. The World Anti-Doping Agency is funding the two-year project to determine if Viagra should be added to the list of banned drugs in sports.
Viagra is suspected of being the latest aid in cycling. At the Giro d'Italia last month, Italian police found 82 Viagra pills and syringes in the car of top cyclist Andrea Moletta, according to cyclingnews.com.
''My cycling friends tell me they know people who are taking it in Colorado and California,'' researcher Mark Stoutenberg told the Herald. The theory is that because Viagra causes dilation of the blood vessels it could aid the flow of oxygen to muscles.
Stoutenberg also said that so far none of the male human test subjects who have been taking a 50-milligram Viagra pill before getting on a stationary bike have been burdened by the effect that Viagra is supposed to have on men.
Good thing, too, because all of the test subjects are wearing spandex shorts.
Anyone tried this then? Stand up and admit it!
