Fox Float R stuck down again!

Hello

I have a 2004 specialized enduro. The rear shock is a fox float R which has become stuck down for the second time. The first time it happened I serviced it myself. I got a seal kit from my LBS and everything seemed to go well. First ride out no problems. Second ride the shock became stuck down again. Do you think I should spend another 25 quid on a seal kit or send it off to mojo to be serviced (around 95 quid). Failing that should I put the 95 quid to a new rear shock and if so what?

Is it likely that mojo will do anything I have not done? I am quite heavy (around 18 stone) and run my rear shock at around 275psi. Could my weight be causing an issue?

Thanks for the help

  • Not too familiar with the stuck down issue, but I'd wholeheartedly recommend sending the shock to TFtuned, or at the very least phoning them up and getting their opinion, very knowledgable about these things...
  • This is not uncommon, not so long ago I would have said it was common. They have a problem where the air blows past so even though the shock is compressed the chambers are equalised. This is why they stick down. Its the same with all the fox air shocks as far as I am aware. The more pressure you have the more likely it is to happen.
  • The pressures are supposed to equalise each time the shock extends to full extension. If you overdo the lube oil, some of the lube oil migrates into the negative chamber (which is very small) and the ramp up of negative pressure prevents the shock from extending out to full extension. Once it gets started, there is no way to get the excess negative pressure out except to disassemble the air can (with care).

Try doing the service again, but being very careful with the oil volumes (float fluid) you add back in. Half a pillow pack of float fluid is plenty.
