Hi,

I've got a biucket of 1p, 2p and 10p pieces from years of emptying my pockets of these things after work. The bucket's almost full now.

I don't want to have to put all the money into bank bags - that's just wrong and will take a century. I want to take the bucket to a bank where they will pour it into a machine that'll sort the change, bag it and then give me the total.

Lloyds (my bank) say they won't do it. There are machines at supermarkets that'll do it but will charge me 10%.

Any thoughts? My immediate thought is: buy another bucket.

Andy

I do this for the kids - don;t count it though, I get them to sort into 1p, 2p, 5p, etc and then roughly bag up using bank bags and weigh on electronic scales. From memory a £1 bag of bronze is 357g, a £5 bag of silver 371g (I'd have to check though - have it written down somewhere).
Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos
  • I will sort your change, bag it and give you the total minus my fee of 7% :D

Maybe you could find a bank that will sort your loose change and give you the money in notes!

But think of it this way-there could be £300 pounds or more in loose change that is doing nothing but collecting dust. Lets assume you have exactly £300 of loose change in your bucket! If you did pay the 10% at a supermarket that is £270 that you can put in your wallet and carry easily! Just think of all the cycling goodies you could buy with £270! :D

Having all that loose change doing nothing is similar to having a bike sitting in a shed and not getting used and we all know how much quality bikes can cost! 8)

  • I think it's 8% at a tesco change wizard. :(

Wait 'til the next time it's lagging it down and count it into bags, it costs nowt and is theraputic. Get ya kids to help (if you have any) for a small reward.

But, don't count it in front of the missus, else she'll want half.

  • OR you could give it away...

JOKE!! Stupid credit crunch got me saving coppers now too...

Try phoning around banks / post offices to see if they'll count it for free, and give you cash. Can't hurt.

Or you could do it the free way - ask for some bags and count it yourself, just think of the shiny goodies you can now get with your cash!

My uncle had a large whiskey bottle, approx 24" high, with copper and 5p pieces in it to a depth of about 4" and one afternoon decided to count it. Grabbed the bottle by the neck and the bottom stayed behind as did all the coinage.

Kids are the ones to get to do the counting for you, it will be good for their maths.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

I think you should give it all to charity, purely for being too lazy to take a few coppers out with you everyday and get rid of them.
  • what a dilema, instead of wasting time opening a thread about such subject, just count it.

    Please, stop whinning!

Who cares! Just say it's a bucket load.

I kept all my short change for a year. I was surprised that in that time I only accumulated £14-something. I dumped it in the Red Nose Day bucket at Sainsbury's.
