Got a new Gt mountain bike in the post, When putting the handle bars on and moving the spacers to the required height, I have loosened the 4 stem bolts, placed stem in position but when i tighten the down bolt there is still a rattle of movement, i have tried to re- do this several times now. What am i doing wrong ?

Sounds like the stem isn't pressing onto the bearings enough. There needs to be a gap between the top of the steerer tube and the stem, with the stem above the steerer tube by approx 5mm. You might need to use all the spacers supplied.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.
  • have you checked that the forks havn`t got any play in them?, there may also be a part missing from your headset.

    Mmm 4 stem bolts?

you did tighten the top cap bolt first to preload the bearings? and then tighten the stem?
