Can't decide whether to feel bad for laughing at someone's inevitable downward spiral to oblivion, or admire one of the best pieces of performance art in decades. Is it a put-on, or what?

    Mmmmmm interesting that. Difficult to tell whether he's trying to fool people, when I saw it I thought he was trying to be Andy Kaufman.

    It's pretty weird. There are times when he smiles at some of Letterman's quips and it definitely looks like he's putting it on... but it's one hell of an elaborate joke if he's faking it.

    On the other hand, you look at his bizarre and freaky upbringing (on a Children of God commune) and his family history... and then it gets a bit worrying.
  • I actually thought it was letterman that comes across especially badly from the interview. He was obnoxious and mocking from the start. I can see why Phoenix wouldn't give him the time of day
