anyone any experience of them??

an saving for a new wheelset for the bike as the ones i have are Heavy and found a few sets on 317's, according to a few places they are a go anywhere do anything rim,
in comparison to the xc717 they appear to be about 100G heavier but seem to be quite a bit cheaper!
are they worth a look or is it better to save more and get some 717's or Dt 4.2's???

would ideally love a pair of super light scandium wheels form china but they are some serious saving materiel for me! (£350+)
so think these or similar could be a good option???

They are 40g heavier each. But have a weaker join and made form a softer alloy.

    I wouldn't say any stronger than a 717.
  • I ran a set for about 6 months XM317s on Hope XC hubs.....

As a wheelset they were fine, quite robust but never struck me as being lightweight. Felt very secure riding on them though, can take a bit of a beating, but are not totally hardcore in terms of durability.

Find them on a lot of £1500.00 - £1800.00 rigs so can't be that bad. They came stock with my Marin... I just upgraded to XTR when I had some extra cash... not bad at all.

I dinged mine on a kerb lol. My old 217 were much tougher.
  • hmmn, think they could be an option to keep me going, save me a bundle of weight on my current wheels and can be swapped over when i can afford some more!

thanks guys, will do a bit more research into them and weights built up etc!

    as ever, this place rocks!

  • I've a set of 317s on Hope XC hubs, handbuilt at NWMTB, on my Heckler and have taken them generally over the Dark Peak (rocky!) for the last 5 years and apart from a few scuffs have stayed true and no dents, use with cinder 2.25 on the front and cinder 2.1 on the rear, profile on each fine for me although some mags say don't run anything wider than a 2.1 on 317s as they're pretty narrow and cause too round a tyre profile. My Conti vertical 2.3s were narrow for the supposed size anyway so I've not had a problem but I suppose I'm not flat out down a muddy World Cup downhill course, but how many of us are?

Not super lightweight but not bad for the hammer they take.

    cheers

  • thats great thank you!
have been nosing at build costs through merlin for them on pro 2's and after cheesys post on xt hubs too, and a pair of disc 3137's with dt comp black spokes on xt 6 bolts come in at £139 and weigh in roughly 1042g front and 1222g rear, not the lightest but would take some punishment, however, my current rear wheel wieghs in at 1800g with just the disc on it! so would be a considerable saving!
an xt 6bolt on a 717 with dt revo. spokes comes in at roughly 897g front and 1087g rear for £161
looks like for an extra £20 you get a fair saving of 45-50g per rim and 100g on the spokes side! although the wheels wont take quite such a battering but end of the day they are an upgrade over the ones i currently have and will be on a lightweight xc bike so isnt too much bother!
pro2's would save 50g front and 150g rear but the price shoots up to £245 for them on 317's with dt comps! just dont think i can justify that much nor save that amount without spending it lol!

hmmn, looks like i may be persuaded to go for the 717's and the revo spokes now but the info on the rims is vary handy!
    thanks all!

The newer centrlok XT hubs are much lighter - adaptors are available to 6 bolt which weigh very little. Rear hub is 350g.
  • I've had 317 rims on shimano xt hubs since I got the Crush, they have served me well, giving me no problems at all. I ride on the heavy side too, and no dings or buckles.

I did however just upgrade to 819's on Hope Pro2 hubs, £250 all in with black spokes built by Stif in Leeds. I haven't had loads of experience with them, but the consensus is that they are very very tight, they feel a lot safer and much stronger, and I haven't really been able to tell the difference in weight yet.
