Hi There, been away from the racing scene for 6 years. looking for a good, strong set of wheels pref Campag fitting . i always used Record or Chorus 36 hole on Mavic SSC rims or good old GP4's - dont think i will go back to tubs so any help on these new factory wheels or any builder who`s still building 36 hole wheels would be a help.cheers

  • If you use the option "search", you'll find lots of threads on wheels, for all possible weight combinations... the topic has been extensively discussed.

I think i could summarise with a :get the heavy and cheap ones

  • I'm 20st and just ordered a set of wheels from harry rowland. I've been riding 28/32 set of wheels on an Allez Elite built on CXP 22's which came with the bike.

Roval Echappe are a good reasonably-priced factory wheel designed for heavier riders & can be had with campag freehub.

Finding a builder isn't a problem, and most decent LBSs have mechanics who are perfectly competent. Recommendation is a good thing. There are some professional wheelbulders active here if you look around!

I'd go with DT Swiss RR1.1 double eyelet rims, or Ambrosio Excellence. Both can safely be tensioned to 1200N, whereas the oft-cited Mavic Open Pro's have a manufacturer's recommended limit of 900N.

This is important because the strengthof a wheel depends on high, even spoke tension, and fi you're a bog lad then 36 tight spokes is the order of the day.
  • I'm 95kg and my 20/24-spoke Fulcrum Racing 7's have never been a problem!
AT MY AGE, I SHOULD KNOW BETTER !!!
  • i'm just under 90KG and again the racing 7's haven't been a problem and i've poped down some lumpy old roads and tracks to be honest.
  • i've got kysrium sl's on my 'summer bike and askiums on my 'winter' one loose spoke in the askiums and cones tightening has been the sum of the problems i've had with them, i'm 98kg (hopefully falling) i have also used 32 spoke record on mavic open pro without issue too.
