England football team?

I was sat watching the England (mostly Aston Villa players) friendly against Spain (mostly Liverpool players) and was wondering what was the highest number of players from one league team who had been on the pitch at any one time during an England match? Surely it would be advantageous as the players would know each others game! For instance maybe a better substitution at half time would have been to have brought Ashley Young on to compliment Agbonlahor and Heskey rather than that old man Beckham (though he didn't do too badly IMHO)
Can we fix it?
Yes we can!

Shame the villa players were all sh#t,especially Agbonlahor who couldn`t trap a bag of cement.Smarter than the average bear.0

There seems to be a similarity between the state of English football and the state of the UK financial system. Both seem to be populated by a bunch of overpaid clueless bankers, of one sort or another.

I used to love football and watch it religiously. Whilst the tv was on last night and the match was playing I was just completely indifferent. Got tired and went to bed before the end, picked up the score on the t'interweb this morning, started reading the report but got bored after 2 paragraphs. Maybe I'm getting old.
I'd actually rather put on an old TdF DVD!!!

p.s. althuogh an Arsenal supporter I'm actually really please to see the exciting Villa younsgters doing so well and getting a go in the national squad. I think Agbonlahor is an excellent young payer, as is Ashley Young (Barry's older but also very good).0 -
Did anyone else notice last night that when England were defending, the midfielders and defenders were basically standing in two lines going straight across the pitch. So when Spanish players ran into the spaces between the lines, nobody went to pick them up. This happened time and time again.
I presume this is because the England players don't have enough confidence in each other to trust their team-mates to provide cover if they leave their positions.
Watching England - why do I bother?0 -

I seem to remember an England team in the early 80's that had 9 or 10 Liverpool players in it. This was when Liverpool was winning everything and actually had that many English nationals in the team.

To be fair this was never going to be a winner for the team. They're playing the best team in Europe at the moment, who probably put out their strongest team.
Had England had their strongest side and lost they would've got a pasting in the press and by fans that they just aren't good enough. So..... give some of the less established players a game, do some experimentation (that's what friendlys are for), if the team loses they're losing to the best side in Europe and had put out a relatively speaking inexperienced international team.
Friendlies really aren't good viewing, your better sticking to games that mean something!0 -

Can't believe some of the comments.Only a few months ago we were beating Croatia on there home soil.Yesterday we were playing the euro champs away in a friendly with many of our first pick players missing. No doubt the boo boys will be waiting for any slip ups in the world cup quailifiers.Come on were not going to win the world cup every four years. But lets get behind our team!!

At least I seem to have got one sensible answer from Dog Breath.
David James? Now why does successive England coaches/managers continue to have any faith in him? He doesn't have the nickname "TEFLON" for no reason!

Agree with that. Sometimes you watch him and just have to clkose your eyes because you know it's all going to go wrong at other times he's amazing and looks like the best keeper in the world.
That said I'd like to see Rob Green get a go, but I would say that I'm a West Ham supporter :shock:0 -
Green`s pretty average unfortunately, there`s a real shortage of English goalkeeping talent at the moment.Smarter than the average bear.0

I wouldn't mind losing to Spain, if only England could get the basics right. Personally I would never boo the team - let's face it, they're not going to play better - but with so much money going into our league, is it too much to expect a team capable of passing the ball with a high degree of accuracy?
This isn't so much a failing of the players and coaches. Unfortunately, our complacent FA has been allowed to get away with a coaching regime in this country that does not produce a team talented enough to even challenge for major honours. Instead they spend 100s of millions on doing up Wembley.
The sooner this country realises that we are long. long way behing other major footballing nations the better.0 -
What do David James and Mickey Mouse have in common?
They both wear gloves for no apparent reason!

I knew watching Attenborough's new Series on the beeb was the correct decision. I still love Football, its a great game, but I gave up watching International friendlies some time ago. Spurs are so much more important that Im peed off when we dont get proper football because England play  . I saw all of Spurs pre season friendlies on the net but wouldnt watch my Country play on a terrestrial channel.
Its nothing to do with the fact that no Spurs players played though, I promise .
Every 2 years we all get caught up in a tabloid led frenzy of ere we go, ere we go, its a war, kill the Germans, its our time, golden generation, footballs coming home and the like. Well testicles to it, Im not doing it again.0 -

Like Dalglish, Hansen, Whelan, Lawrenson, Souness, Nicol, Grobelaar (sp)..........
I don't think so.0 -

And there aren't that many of 'the others' to talk about - English goalkeepers in the top flight are a bit of a rarity. Couple of years back there was talk of Wolves' Matt Murray getting a try-out for England, though as with so many on the Molineux payroll in recent times, his form has suffered due to long-standing injury since then.

I gave up on h Football yonks ago.
Much prefer to watch a great game of Rugby Union.
Although last weeks England/Italy match was mind numbingly dull.
I think Ireland are the dark horses this year and may just pull it off.0
