Hi,

I am looking at an ebay listing HERE and would like your thoughts, it is a cracking deal, but is there anything I should be looking out for??

It looks legit enough and he has even highlghted the scratch. Should I pull the trigger??

Cheers

  • Thats a decent price, but does it come with any warranty/aftersales back up?? I never really cared about this until i found a crack in a spesh roubaix i had, I had no proof of purchase (bought 2nd hand) the frame was a write off

Wiggle are doing the RS 08 for £1250, I bought one from them before xmas
I used my wife as a recommend a friend, She bought it and i got a credit of £125 in my wiggle account, just my thoughts, hope this helps

Perhaps "cracking" is not the best adjective to use here.

This is not a Cervelo dealer, you will have no warranty. Given the history of frame and fork recalls with Cervelo, it's very risky.

Can you afford to replace if it breaks???

I bought an Addict SL, unused but second hand, with no warrenty for £1000, almost 50% of RRRP, it snapped after 6 months rendering it unusable. I contacted Scott to see if they woudl replace and the answer as I expected was NO. However they did do mea a deal to sell me another frame at trade price for which I was thankfull, I opted for a CR1 Pro as I couldn't afford to go for another Addict, also I didn't want another super lightweight bike in case it broke again.

So here I am waiting for my new frame to be delivered at the beginning of March, and I haven't ridden a bike since the 30.12.08  so not only am I amost £500 out of pocket I am also FAT.

Think carefully about it and if you can afford to take the risk then fair enough.

Make sure they send you an 09' model and not an '08' which has different coloured graphics. FWIW if it were me I would go for an 08 model which you can get from various dealers for the same kind of money. And it would be safe. With warranty. Nice frames.
  • As giant manco said here is a link to merlin selling the same frame for £1195 ( I had this on the short list when buying a new frame a month ago ) if you add on the £25 the ebay seller wants for P&P then you are saving the grand total of £20 . I think I would pay the £20 for the warranty .

Apparently the 08 is identical to the 09 they just changed the colour scheme. I would go for an 08 they look better anyway. The 08s at Wiggle only come with a 1 year Wiggle warranty the ones from Stonehenge and the like have the Cervelo lifetime warranty, but check.

The ones at Merlin are 08.

I have been considering one of these frames myself not a 51 though. I saw a brand new 08 51 RS with mid depth Zipp carbon wheels, Sram Red Groupset and it weighed under 15lbs with pedals. It had just been built for a customer and looked great over £4000 though.

Have spent the last month looking at various options to buy the RS. As pointed out the 08 and 09 frames are the same. I was thinking of the 08 purely on the basis of cost, but had a test ride on the 09. They actually look a lot better in real life - the silver looks much more grey in photos. Lovely ride.

I would agree with the others that you should leave it alone and spend a little more to get the warranty. The fact it's got a nick is enough to put me off. I had a 08 frame lined up from a reputable shop for under £1,100 delivered with limited warranty but decided against it. Cervelo offer a lifetime warranty so I looked at authorised dealers instead. The Cervelo website has a list of these worldwide. Thought about importing but not worth it anymore.

Wiggle - the website says it's OEM and comes with 5 year guarantee. Worth considering.

Merlin - you can negotiate on the website price, and postage is only £6.50. That said the 51 is out of stock anyway.

Stonehenge - £1,200 for the 08 with the guarantee is about as good as it gets. Sadly they were out of the size I wanted (56) - don't know if they can get the 51.

Primera - didn't contact them but they're an authorized dealer and say they'll pricematch

    Best of luck!

    Thanks for the replies guys,

They allowed me to take a moment and pause for thought. The pause let me decide not to splash the cash for a whole variety of reasons, not the least of which is the perceived unreliability associated with the Cervelo and the downfalls of developing a fault with a non-warrantied product.

    Cheers

Well I do like what Cervelo are doing, the design of their bikes are awesome imo, but the reliability is in question of course, first there was the R2.5 and then the Wolf SL fork recall, so if you do decide on getting one down an authorised route, then I guess these are the things you should be thinking of.

Good call on reflection, but I still hanker for a 08' RS myself. The prices are getting more and more tempting .....

Stock seems to be running out amongst the dealers for just that reason I think, so I suspect the price isn't going to go lower. £1,200 seems to about the floor.
Haven't heard about many problems with the RS, and I hope I don't having just put down a deposit on one!

Nice frame I'm sure you'll love it Mark. Be sure to post some pics when built up.

    .

To be fair however, in both the cases of the R2.5 recall, and the Wolf SL recall, Cervelo replaced the items whether bought from a Cervelo dealer or not.
