Is my shifter bu**ered?

When out this weekend I tried shifting 'down' on the front chainring but it wouldn't move. I undid the cable & continued the ride in small ring.

I tried 'fixing' it tonight. The mech is fine, but the shifter doesn't seem to move over far enough to shift 'up', but looks like it would release if it did.

The gearing is Shimano 105 with a standard double chainring.

Any ideas? - or is it time to attempt a warranty claim?

Same happened to me after 2 days with 105. Had the shifter replaced under warranty and been perfect since.

I'm suspicious that it was either faulty from the start or set up incorrectly as the action was pretty tight and I didn't have the trimposition that I have now.

The new one was instantly a vast improvement immediately.
I'm left handed, if that matters.

Hmm, that's weird. The only time I've had trouble with a shifter was the same problem with a left hand 105 shifter.

Not long after my right shifter went my left one went too.

    Maybe a faulty batch?

I have a fresh new pair to flog now so.... :D

Spoke to one LBS today. They say that there has been a fault with some LH 105 shifters, which Shimano (and the importer Madison) are aware of and that it should be a warranty claim.

Also spoke to the LBS I bought it from, who said to take it in.

    So it's off to the toy shop this weekend . . . . .

I'm having a similar problem, it's ok when the cable isn't attached but as soon as I attach the cable it doesn't click into the next position. is it the same problem?

My LH 105 shifter sometimes stops working but returns to normal after a bit of persuasion (jabbing it back and forth whilst swearing as a hill approaches).

Mine moves 'up', but not far enough to catch the chainring, yet I cannot 'release' the cable any further from the shifter.

Mate of mine had similar problems with the LH shifter on his Roubiax - it wouldn't jam but just snarl the chain up in the front rings. A week later one of his mates had his front mech seize just before the climbing started on the Exmoor Beast. Not ideal!

You'd expect better from 105 considering people (not me) talk about it as being very close to Ultegra.

Mine goes in to the shop in the morning.

Got to Certini at 8.45 this morning.

LH shifter was replaced under warranty and I was on my way home at 9.45.

Great service from the guys there.

It's gone again!!! Boooooooo! 30 miles after fitting
  • I have just got Ultegra ones three weeks ago, and they have gone back the second time today.
The left one will not shift down, but will shift up. :?
They have gone back to the shop once, then returned saying nothing wrong with them.

Under pressure or connected they do not shift.......aaaargggh!
