Didn't see it myself but Brad Wiggins was on Fifth Gear last night. It's on their website now, a google for "fifth gear bradley wiggins" will find it (can't copy the link cos I'm using my mobile).

He must have been on for a whole 4 mins. Wiggins "sprinted" up to 30mph Jason Plato then rode got his bike (a Cinelli) up to 24mph. Plato then drove a Maserati flat out and the idea was for Wiggins to get within 6 MPH (the difference between them on the bikes). Wiggins equaled Plato's speed in the car and won the challenge. He said it was a lot of fun doing so. This took longer to type than the clip took to show.
  • The whole things was stunningly pointless... they determined that Bradley can cycle faster than the presenter (was it Jason Plato? I can't recall now) but that they can both drive a car around a banked oval at the same speed. Next week they're going to do the same thing with some sailors I believe... I suspect they will once again find that the car goes at the same speed regardless of driver...

I never watch Fifth Gear anyway - someone in work told me about last night's - I've always thought of it as a poor man's Top Gear which I think is ace even though I have no interest in cars :)

With that and the Parka, looked like he was auditioning for a role in the remake of Quadrophenia!

"Fat bum" was eating his dinner............... in the real world work doesn't finish at 5pm

I fell over it flipping channels and thought it was interesting (I don't normally watch it because of the excrable Vicki Butler-Gobsh1te or that irritating skinny bearded bloke...).

Plato was driving the Maserati flat-out around the Millbrook bowl.
The car has a theoretical top speed 15mph faster, but that would be on a nice flat surface, not a banked oval, with some surface bumps/vibration, headwind one way/tailwind the other, etc.
Plato does this sort of thing for a living, he's driven touring cars for years including at Rockingham and has had a go at Nascar in the USA, as well as driving round Millbrook regularly for 5th Gear.
Wiggins however, whilst he may have ridden a bike around a banked track, hasn't this experience. But he's a professional sportsman with tremendous hand-eye co-ordination, the ability to concentrate and get in the zone and exclude extraneous things like the risk of killing himself, etc.
He got to the same speed as Plato, i.e. managed to get the car to go as fast as it could.
But whilst Plato was visibly relaxed in the car, Wiggins was hunched forward staring intently through the screen.

Someone 'normal' like you or me would either have not got anywhere near that speed or would have stuffed the Maser...

Nah its far, far worse than top gear. Top Gear is entertaining. Fifth Gear isnt, its for salesmen buying estates and beemers. Now and again they do something interesting. (Like crashing a lorry into a car to demonstrate blind spots)

Was fifth gear out before Top Gear?

As it's stands to reason. And Top Gear is better in any situation

    :?

That's what I meant. Top Gear is ace. Fifth Gear tries to be but fails :)

I remember when Dave started showing it, the trailer featured someone sat in the engine bay of a car saying "i want to be an engine" in a schoolboy voice. I thought... no, I'll stick with Clarkson & co.
