    Two thoughts:

You might be doing your shoes up too tight, this can constrict the muscles between your foot bones and cause cramps. I've had the same in snowboard boots.

Secondly, tonic water is a good remedy for cramps the quinine really helps. Buy a stack of those small cans and have one a day.

Cramping can sometimes happen from not enough sodium and fluids.

Just a bit of thread revival:

I suffered one of those almighty hopping-round-room-swearing-blue-murder cramps down my right calf the other day. I get mild ones occasionally fairly often - usually after a period of rest and then if I'm doing anything where I hold my legs tense for a bit - oww off they go.

But this one was a real killer. The knot is still there, I think it happened either Friday night or Sat morn, I forget which. It doesn't hurt when riding or dancing (up on my toes) but aches when walking (which I'm doing with a slight limp atm).

Thing is. I'd not ridden since the Wednesday. And I'd done a longish but very easy-going ride on the Monday, with resting days in between them all.

Could this be a stretching thing, should I do the odd stretch even on days when I'm not riding/exercising in order to ward off stiffness and cramping? Or is it doing to be a chemical thing?

    Wee background:
I like salt, I don't think I eat too much but you'd be hard pushed to suggest there isn't enough of it in my diet.
I love milk and will drink a fair bit of it at once.
I keep forgetting to take multivitamins...

    Stretch and stretch again!

Works for me....I get it in my calf usually or in my feet (flat footed y'see)....Hence I wear orthotic inserts for my feet - really helps and I stretch before and after riding! Lots of mineral water helps too.....

Well you say that, but there is some evidence that stretching can be bad for repetitive activities with limited range of motion, like cycling.

Clearly, I happened upon this particular news story and hung on to it a s a justification for not stretching.

2 ways to avoid cramp -(1) drink lucozade, lots of it (2) put a salt lick on your handlebars.

I like the salt lick idea!!
  • On a separate note....one of the most painful experiences I have ever had was when, as a teenager, I was sprinting on a fixed wheel bike and got a cramp!! The whole calf locked up and, since I couldn't stop pedalling, it just got wrenched around and around until I could stop. I still remember the exact spot it happened. Not as bad as a root canal when the pain killers have worn off, but pretty painful nonetheless. Don't know how it compares with child birth though!

On a more relevant note, after much experimenting I found that calcium helped relieve calf cramps on long rides. I used to keep antacids or citracal with me and within 2-5 minutes of chewing 1 or 2 my cramps would be gone. When it comes to electrolytes sometimes it's not the usual suspects.
No-one wanted to eat Patagonia Toothfish so they renamed it Chilean Sea Bass and now it's in danger of over fishing!

I was thinking of the smaller ones you get for rodents, on a little wheel next to the cycle computer.
Many different images from one dodgy sentence.

An image of a radical new form of indoor trainer just came to mind - something like a giant hamster wheel. I blame Greg T for his hamster beer comment.
