Hey guy's, i have an 08 trek 6000, upgraded most things apart from the groupset, mainly because it works and does what i want it to do!
I've got a deore rear mech, alivio front, sram cassette, deore shifters (9 speed set-up). I'm in need of a new chain!
In all honesty the last time i rode the bike it got caped in mud and water, i stuck it in the garage intending to wash it the next day but never got round to it. After a good clean and service the chain looks a little worse for ware and for the sake of a few ££ i may aswell buy a new one.
What chain should i be looking at getting? I ride in all weather, xc/singletrack/bashing around the woods etc. I've been looking at shimano chains but i'm unsure what model would be best?

Hugh

I'd get a SRAM PC951 or 971. Cheap, easy to fit, reliable.
  • Id go for a KCM

19 quid for a KMX X9L its light. free delivery 260gr

But if you are not worried about weight then go with the sram like supersonic said.

  • Go for a SRAM.I like the convenient fitting.I prefer the SRAM 991 for the fully plated links, but 971 will do.

What is the convenient fitting? kmc has power link as well.

Not that I care, I was going to get sram but the KMC was lighter, cheaper, and better rated or same rated as the 991.

Will post a link if you want that KMC, for 20 all in, I love it.

But then again sram could be easyer to remove as I have not removed my KMC yet.

Personally for the bling and extra protection id get the nitride coated kmc x9l great chains, im still a fan of the 991 but imo kmc are the better chain, very tough.
The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.

    KMC X9SL here.

It's been on the bike for about a year, well over 1,500 miles (prob nearer 2500 inc commuting thinking about it). It's only stretched by 0.08% (to be double checked when I put it back on the bike).

The powerlink is easy to use, just like an s-ram chain.

This chain was a definite improvement over the standard Shimano chain, in terms of shifting, responsiveness and wear rate.

Whatever chain you get, look after it, and it will look after your drivetrain.
  • Might have to look at at the KMC next time.I currently have a SRAM 991 hollow pin which I got for £19,so I`m happy.

  • Got a KMC the other day, cost me £20 from the LBS which included 2 extra powerlinks. I haven't really tried it out yet - weather far too crap.

Before we all recommend Hugh spends the best part of £20 on a chain, have a look at his other kit.

Hugh, with the mech etc you have there is no point trying to save a few grams and as long as you look after your chain more or less any will work OK on your bike.

The main reasons fo rusing KMC or SRAM chains is their split link, allowing you to take the chain off to clean it.

The SRAM 951 like this will do the job well.

hey guy's, yeah i wasn't overly fussed about weight at this stage as my current chainset/gears will see me through this summer. In the end i ordered a sram pc971, this was the same chain already fitted to my bike!

    thanks-Hugh
  • Hi all,

Any recommendations on a chain to replace a unreliable shimano hg53 on my kona firemountain deluxe 2008. Its has broken 3 times within the last 4 weeks on very casual rides.

    Much appreciated
  • SRAM PC971 - light(ish) and tough as old boots!!!!!!

Much better than my Dura Ace/XTR chain - at half the cost!!!!
  • I have been looking about at chains, poor reviews in general regardless of brands. Granted your unlikely to post reviews about a product if it works.

These things can be dangerous. I got wiped out on a main road the third time the chain broke. I no longer trust the bike not to break under pressure.

I was looking at the PC971 review

I'll give this chain a go.

    Thanks buddy
