HI,

Hope you can help, I have a 2006 Scott Genius MC50 with 40 kit so Fox Talas forks and XTR rear mech.

I haven't changed a thing on it since I got it apart from gear cables.

I'm looking to refurb it from the ground up..

Would love to hear everyone's thought as to what to get
Needs:

New wheel set
New Brakes
New Drive Train
New handle bar and stem
New Seat Post (struggling with this as it's an odd size)

Please Help!!

Thanks,

    Think I should add..

I am considering the following: -

Wheel Set - Hope Pro II Hubs on mavic rims (wiggle)
Brakes - Torn between Shimano XT and something different
Drive Train - Thinking XTR (rear) XT (free wheel) XT (front mech) XT Chain set
Handle Bar and Stem - Easton carbon and Hope stem
Seat Post - Hoping for Carbon but Scott's a big size so not sure.

I'm looking to lose as much weight as possible but still keep it strong enough.
I ride mostly XC but i'm not the most graceful rider.

    Any suggestions welcome..

    Thanks,

Wheels - I'd go for XT or XTR hubs over Hopes, on Mavic 717 rims.

Brakes - Formula Oros seem well regarded, maybe have a look at Avid Juicy 7s or maybe the Elixirs.

Drivetrain looks about right, Hope stem is strong but not lightest especially for the cost, there are lots of cheap, light and strong stems out there - SMICA stuff always gets mentioned on here.

ha there new to all this forum shit so dont no if are be any help but will give it a shot,
your spec list loooks preety good why dont you go for a fall xt groupeset from merlin or someink http://merlincycles.co.uk/?fn=product&p ... egoryId=83 seeams a lot of mony to spend but wood make your bike seam like new, as for the carbon bar stem combo id say go for it if you where a light wight xc race type rider but as you say your not to gracful id stick to just a carbon bar maby a easton as for the stem thomson is the way to go and same with the seat post light storng and well sexy  also should be able to get it in the size you wont it in hope this helps you mate
  • the xtr is a waste of extra money over xt, it's just bling. won't last any longer. i have hope hubs on mavic rims, i personally don't like the hope hubs as there is an awful lots of drag and i don't like the idea of the skewer needs loads of pressure to keep it all together snugly, the bearing / freewheel just slots on and then the pressure from the skewer holds it together, had no major problems except back skewer getting bit tight on threads now. i didn't have enough pressure on back skewer so the freewheel was wobbling. oh just one rim split on weld but was just a one off thing, well so lbs said and they are usually pretty good and right. i have hope minis brakes in red and they are brilliant had em 4 years now and never had a single problem or niggle. i have full xtr but will downgrade to xt this summer as will save me a fortune but won't affect performance as i'm not a thorough bred racer, i'll just goto toilet before my ride and shed the few grammes that way lol
    Cotic Soul rider.

    HI scottgeniusltd2005,

Thanks for the info, sounds like Hope isn't the way to go.
Thanks for the info on the brakes.

Think I will go full XT groupset.
Thinking about putting the frame in for a re-spray, it's had quite a few dings over the last couple of years.
Thinking about white, anyone got any thoughts??

Now thinking about a Thomson stem and easton bars, which models would people recommend??

Anyone got any thoughts on a Carbon seat post, the Scott has a seriously thick post and I don't know if you can get an upgrade???

    Thanks again,

    E

i think your ritght in geting the xt groupeset it will transform your ride and xtr is no beter preformance wise it just lasts a bit longer thats all, as for the stem go for a thomson x4 comes in the oversize 31.8 so rember to order the right size bar to, for the bars id go for these http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/?fn=produ ... egoryId=74 its not worth paying the extra for the ec90 not as stiff or as wide and they cost around £20 more, im a pit stuck on the seat post tho do you have to have carbon in my exsperiance it dosent really ofter that mutch more confort over a alloy one mat as well just use a larger valoume tire and increase your grip and conifdence at the same time do you no what size your post is???? id still go for a thomson elite they come in loads of sizes and loooooook super bling again hope this helps you mate
