On sunday i was out and about in the snow and after a long ish down hill run the free wheel would not engage again. this left me at the bottom of a hill with a big push up to get home. Once i got to the top of the hill and tryed to peddal again the freewheel did engage and i managed to get home on it.
Looking on the internet. I have seen people talking about the greese in the free wheel get so cold and thick that the palls would not re-engage. how likely is that to happen at -2 with a good 5 min fast down will to add some wind chill?
Any one else have this issue or not or can i use this as an excuse for a new set of wheels.

What freehub?
The grease can thicken, but also water in there can freeze it up.0 -
My girlfriends dad had this problem last Sunday when we were out riding a few hills in Church Stretton.
We were at the top of the hill near enough but he had to turn around and coast back down as his hub would not engage.
One thing you can do is wee on the hub as it will make it warm and possibly correct the problem for a short while. He was going to try this but didn't need to go unfortunately!!!!!0 -
It's more likely to be water ingress.
There shouldn't really be so much grease in it anyway, just a light coating usually. That said, most normal automotive/bike greases are good for a few degrees below without problems anyway.0 -
so a good service and regreese should clear it. I have had a look for the make... but they are a no name brand from my 08 CB team. about 1 year oldNothing in life can not be improved with either monkeys, pirates or ninjas
