Ok so i have been commuting for about a year on my mountain bike with slick tyres on but after trying to improve fitness i found on long rides last summer the bike started to get heavy, so have decided to get a road bike
i am currently trying to get my work to take up the cycle to work scheme so that i can get a trek 1.7, obviously not always to use to gget to work but they wont know. however have a feeling they wont agree to it, gave them the info before xmas and now finally with directors to discuss.
so here is my question, do i save up over good few months and buy a new bike around £500 or do i go and buy a cheap second hand one for say £100 - £200 and save up for a more expensive one which prob get this time next year so can save a fair bit
or
shall i still get a cheap road bike and if i can get a bike through cycle to work get a really good mountain bike to go off road on with mates as keep asking me but bike aint that suited atm an also has killed me not being able to have a good ride in the snow last week
commute is bout 4 miles each way so not much but can go senic route down coutry lanes and make it 12-13 mile each way which i would like to do
bear in mind i have never used a road bike so the obiovus speed and comfort advantages will be apparent with any type really
thanks in advance
