Suspension Upgrade ?

Having only ever ridden motocross, which I've had to give up due to serious injuries I am new to mountain biking. I recently bought a new 08 Specialized fsr xc comp which I have found to be a good purchase, however the bike seems to lack travel on the suspension (Rock Shox Tora SL 302) and seems to bottom out on a lot of the small to medium jumps on my local trails. With this in mind I am hoping that some good person can give some advice on what type of shock I could upgrade to, that would be compatible with my bike without upsetting the geometry. Any suggestion would be most welcomed.

are you getting the right sag? about 20%
if yes then it is fine. if no try a stiffer spring.
and i guess you mean fork and not shock (rear)."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Thanks for your comments. I 've got the sag / preload set-up based on my weight which equates to about 18% of travel on the fork. I never gave the spring a thought as there only is 100mm travel on the fork I thought about upgrading to something with say 120 - 140mm travel. whats your thoughts ?0

nope. not really advisable.
you want to stick to about 100mm travel. add 20mm and you will slacken the head angle by about 1 degree and that will make the handling slack and it will also move you weight back making it harder to ride up hill and will also require a harder spring on the rear.
the fork should bottom out occasionally. if it does not then you are not using the full travel.
try playing with the compression damping.
and make sure you do not have too much rebound damping or you will be packing the fork down, and then causing a bottom out."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
